This award-winning history of horses literature pack by Beautiful Feet Books was the perfect fit for our daughter who wanted to read and learn about nothing but horses. She would read and reread the same horse books over and over again and devour horse training and horse rearing books intended for adults. She just couldn’t get enough.
I could not believe it when I discovered this beautiful literature approach to horse study. This is a great curriculum for learning all about the horse and I knew I had found the perfect fit for my daughter.
“…it was plain that Misty had found her own kind of happiness – with people. No one has ever told her she is not one of them. She wouldn’t believe it anyway.”
– Marguerite Henry
There are few things that can touch our hearts more deeply than a connection with beautiful empathetic animals. Having worked with children in child protection, I have seen and read many stories where horses and dogs could break down barriers where no human could. The sheer size, strength and power behind a horse often masks the fact that underneath that tough exterior is a gentle beast, ready and able to connect with those who need them most.
Marguerite Henry knows and understands horses personally and basing her books on historical fact, stays true to the role horses have played throughout history. The History of the Horse takes you on a wild ride through excellent literature, including some of Marguerite Henry’s classic horse titles.
Join your children as they journey with wild Mustangs, a Godolphin Arabian in King of the Wind, the Morgan horse in Justin Morgan Had A Horse, the mesmerising Lipizzaner stallions in White Stallion of Lipizza and the beautiful wild Chincoteague ponies in Misty of Chincoteague.
We were blessed ten years ago to be able to personally visit Assateague Island and the beautiful wild pony nature reserves.
Henry’s Album of Horses (and Album of Dogs) and White Stallion of Lipizza are some of my personal favorites with their delightful sketches and paintings by Wesley Dennis. Extolling some of the greatest virtues, Marguerite Henry books bring us beautiful stories of courage, hard work and the selfless pursuit of loving one’s neighbor.
“If we could act a little more according to common sense, and a good deal less according to fashion, we should find many things work easier.”
– Black Beauty, Anna Sewell
How It Works
History of the Horse is aimed at a 3rd-7th grade level but could easily suit older children too. Included in the pack are 10 selections which include fiction and non-fiction books, written by those who know horses best including the award-winning books of Marguerite Henry. Also included is the teacher guide written by Hilary B. Severson, an instruction book for drawing horses, a deck of cards featuring 54 horse breeds and a notebook.
The guide also contains movie recommendations based on the books with the required books pictured in the front of the guide. The lesson plans include Bible memory verses and readings, comprehension questions, discussion questions and website links. Draw 50 Horses provides instruction for the drawing assignments, guiding children in the basic sketching of horses.
As well as Marguerite Henry, some of our most beloved horse books and authors are featured in this horse study. These include Walter Farley’s Black Stallion and Anna Sewell’s Black Beauty. The DK Horses handbook covers horse anatomy, markings and breed identification of just about every breed.
“The Black was looking out on the open sea; his ears pricked forward, his thin-skinned nostrils quivering, his black mane flowing like windswept flame. Alec could not turn his eyes away; he could not believe such a perfect creature existed.”
– The Black Stallion, Walter Farley
There are 93 lessons in the guide. If you have an avid reader, these could be completed in a semester, however, allowing for a one-year study will give plenty of time to pursue extra research on the topics covered throughout the school year. Your children can choose to do the assignments, drawing and research projects, or just enjoy the wonderful literature that celebrates the beauty and wonder of horses. As one of our most prolific horse authors, there are so many more Marguerite Henry award-winning books that an enthusiastic reader may choose to also enjoy during this year of equine discovery.
Perfect for 3rd-7th grade (but suitable for older children too) homeschoolers or for classroom teachers who want to add an exciting literary component to their history or science studies, History of the Horse is sure to delight child and adult alike.

My daughter harassed me for a long time to read Joey but it took many months for it to reach the top of my reading pile. When I finally picked it up, I cried through the whole book. A beautiful story of love and redemption.
How a Blind Rescue Horse Helped Others Learn to See. Joey came to Hope Reins―a ranch dedicated to helping hurting kids who had been abused, emotionally wounded, or unwanted. By teaching these children to care for rescued animals, the Hope Reins staff were convinced they could reach kids with love and hope and show them that we are never forgotten by God.
By the same author as Joey, Project Solomon is a story of how God uses horses to heal and restore veterans, children and others who are experiencing grief and the effects of trauma and loss.
The True Story of a Lonely Horse Who Found a Home--and Became a Hero. Project Solomon is a powerful story of resilience, sacrifice, and love that reminds us all how much we matter―to each other and to God.
