The hardcover book contains the two storybooks of Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner and the two poetry collections of When We Were Very Young and Now We Are Six. It was published for the first time in 1994 with the individual volumes all published in the 1920s.
Chapter one of Winnie-the-Pooh introduces us to Christopher Robin and Winnie-the-Pooh who lives “under the name of Sanders”, as we come to know and understand the relationship between these two. Pooh’s first appearance has him bumping downstairs on the back of his head, securely in the grasp of Christopher Robin. Milne makes this inseparable pair the stars of his classic children’s stories before expanding to the nursery toys who make up their broader friendship group when Pooh goes visiting in subsequent chapters. Pooh’s friends are inevitably drawn into the world of this beloved character as he discovers the value of friends when he finds himself in a tight place; and the adventures begin.
The poems contained not only in the two books of poetry but also peppered throughout the complete tales are ideal for memorising. Some of them are very short humorous pieces with only four short lines, suitable for very young children to memorise. Others are a little longer and still others are very long. Have each of your children choose their favorite poem or poems from the books to memorise. This way, they will continue to carry Winnie-the-Pooh and friends in their hearts, along with the lessons learned from the stories, long after the reading is over. Choose a poem for yourself too and join your children in this endeavour.
Keeping a little of all that you learn and read over the years in many different genres will aid your children’s memories and act as pegs on which to hang the rest of the information. By memorising one poem from Milne’s classics, your children’s memories will be prompted to recall other poems and stories they read from the same works. They will remember what you were doing, the games you played and the picnics you enjoyed, reliving those moments together for the rest of your lives. Use this memorisation protocol with any book that you read or any subject covered. If you wish, have your child write down each piece they have memorised in a notebook and at the end of the year they will have a complete record of selections from everything they have covered in that year.
Milne’s poems can also be used as models from which to inspire your children to write their own poetry. Observe the rhyme scheme and number of syllables in each line and the number of lines in each stanza. Clap along with each syllable as you read the poem, in order to emphasise the rhythm. Encourage your children to mimic the rhyme scheme in their own poems. If they need a prompt, start them off with a couple of words and see if they can complete the line. Work together until your children are confident enough to attempt this on their own.
If your children are very young or not yet writing independently, try this orally and take turns coming up with the next word/s or line/s.

Finding Winnie
The picture book biography of a young soldier named Harry who first bought, named and cared for a small bear when beginning his military service. He named this bear Winnie after his home city of Winnipeg in Canada and after being called to the frontlines of the first world war in France, he reluctantly took Winnie to her new home at the London Zoo.
