ARTISTIC PURSUITS

If you want an art appreciation curriculum and artist study course that also incorporates art instruction, this is the best I have found and used with my own children. You could easily combine similar age children for many of the courses. Your child will learn the basic elements of art while also having the opportunity to produce their own art piece. Allow the curriculum to work for you. You do not need to complete all of the art lessons (or any if you do not wish). Focus on the appreciation aspects and theory of the courses and complete the practical aspects in the lesson plans, only as it interests your child. Once they learn the theory behind the art and an appreciation of the basics put into context, your child then has the opportunity to create their own art, being inspired by what they have already learned.

CHILD SIZE MASTERPIECES (All ages)

There are detailed instructions for parents in the instruction guide called, How to Use Child-Size Masterpieces. This will be a treasured resource for parents and teachers who follow a Montessori or Charlotte Mason approach with their children, a beautiful, gentle start to art appreciation.

For Steps 1-4, you can utilise these books for children aged 2 onwards. Preschool children can start with a simple sorting or matching game while interacting with beautiful paintings. The activities get progressively more challenging as your child builds on the skills they have learned previously. Sometimes the age recommendations for Steps 5-8 can be for children aged 8 and over but if you have completed Steps 1-4 and they are much younger than 8 years of age, then they may be ready to begin the more advanced steps at a younger age. Be guided by your child rather than your desire to tick any boxes. If a child is pushed beyond what their developing brain is capable of, it may have the opposite effect and they will instead learn to dislike art appreciation. Wallow in each step, continuing to incorporate beautiful books for art appreciation into your days. Delight in the journey rather than any end goal.

Norman Rockwell's A Day in the Life of a Boy
$16.95

Here is one of Norman Rockwell’s most popular works, paired with a rhyming text that’s perfect for reading aloud. In classic Rockwell fashion, the almost two dozen pictures will elicit wry smiles of recognition, from young and old, at childhood’s everyday pleasures. At the back of the book is a short biography of Rockwell, as well as a note by Chuck Marsh, who, as a young boy more than sixty-five years ago, posed for the unforgettable series of pictures.

Mary's work was rejected by the Salon judges time and time again but one day, the great painter Edgar Degas invited her to join him and his group of independent artists, those who flouted the rules and painted as they pleased―the Impressionists. Mary was on her way.

Saving Leonardo

A Call to Resist the Secular Assault on Mind, Morals, and Meaning.

Pearcey depicts the revolutionary thinkers and artists, the ideas and events, leading step by step to the unleashing of secular worldviews that undermine human dignity and liberty. She crafts a fresh approach that exposes the real-world impact of ideas in philosophy, science, art, literature, and film--voices that surround us in the classroom, in the movie theater, and in our living rooms.

“If only you pay attention to it you will see that certain stars are lemon-yellow, others pink or a green, blue and forget-me-not brilliance. And without my expatiating on this theme it is obvious that putting little white dots on the blue-black is not enough to paint a starry sky.”
– Vincent Van Gogh
