75 Beautiful Bible Verses to Comfort a Grieving Mother
I remember my first miscarriage. I had never experienced grief before; not grief as a mother. I had lost my grandpa as a teen and I felt the loss of him, such a kind and loving man. But this was much deeper. I didn’t know what it was at first. I had five beautiful children and I expected it to be difficult but there is something so deep and profound about losing a child you have carried in your womb, a child you have loved from before they were conceived; a child who is, and forever will be, a part of you.
I have had friends who have kept miscarriages (especially multiple miscarriages) secret between themselves and their husbands because of the fear of judgement and unwarranted criticism from family and friends. Dear mother, I encourage you and your husband to not go through this alone. Find someone to console in and share in your grief with you. If you do not have trusted family and friends, confide in a pastor and his wife. Find an older, Godly couple in your church with a listening ear.

This is a grief that has touched many families and you may be surprised to learn of those who have been through and are able to understand what you are going through. They can become a source of strength as they walk with bereaved parents through these times of profound sorrow. They can pray with you and remind you to find your comfort and strength for each day in God’s presence.
When I was in the early days of grieving, a young mother at church with two beautiful little girls approached me and embraced me. She shared the grief of her miscarriage and this was my first contact with someone who knew exactly how I felt. I did not know this mother well but there was an instant connection between us and we did not need to share details because we both “knew”. We became connected by our heart ache and our deeply human experience that is unique to mothers who have lost a child.
I do not know if this is a different grief that is felt by a mother who has lost a child after birth or who has had to go through the death of an older child. For all of you who yearn to be a mother and have never known the joy of conceiving or of birthing a child from your womb, my heart aches for you in your grief. For those of you who have longed to adopt a child and have never seen this dream realised, it is only the Lord who can truly know your heart and the depth of your grief.

For those of us who recognise the sanctity of life and the gift from God that it is, we know that the meaning and sense of it all run much deeper than just ourselves. We also know that the only hope we have for true healing in a time of grief is in the loving arms of Jesus.
With Mother’s Day coming up, there are those of us who with heavy hearts are also grieving the loss of sisters, mothers, grandmothers, aunties and other significant women in our lives. While others are celebrating, this may be a time of sadness and remembrance of those who are no longer with us. If you have lost a child, a mother or other family member, may these verses be a source of comfort as you continue to hold them close to your hearts.
For those who know Jesus as their Lord and Saviour, we are no longer overshadowed by death and darkness but walk in His glorious light. As we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, Jesus’ light shines through the darkness, beckoning us on into His glorious light and healing and salvation.
I have chosen passages rather than just single, stand alone verses. It is easy to make one verse say what you want it to say but putting single verses in context by reading them with the surrounding verses not only helps us to see the true deeper meaning of the single verse but it also helps us to know better, the God who penned the words.

I have listed comforting Bible verses in canonical Bible order. Old Testament verses point forward to the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ. New Testament verses show the fulfilment of Jesus Christ in His life, death and resurrection and how we can look forward to our blessed hope and eternity with Him when the last trumpet sounds and the former things have passed away. The darkest times will pass and there will be no more pain, no more death, no more sorrow. All things will be made new.
Dear mother, may this collection of Bible verses remind you today that Christ Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith. May you know His love and words of comfort, even in the midst of a broken heart. I pray for you now, that our dear Heavenly Father will guide you and keep you through these present sufferings and that you will find comfort in the love of God.
If you have experienced the loss of a child either through miscarriage or after birth and have questioned whether your baby is with Jesus, I encourage you to watch this teaching by Mike Winger to help you through this grieving process. Mike is a humble man of God who does a wonderful job of trying not to come to his own man-made conclusions but to diligently search the Scriptures to see what God says about this.
Always immersed in the Scriptures, Mike highlights the peace of God and the promise of eternal life in King David’s hope of seeing his infant son again in 2 Samuel 12:23. He then compares this with David’s grief and hopelessness over the state of his older son Absalom. Those who are accountable must choose this day whom they will serve.

The 75 Verses…
Psalm 23:1-4
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Psalm 34:17-19
The righteous cry, and the LORD hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the LORD delivers him out of them all.
Psalm 71:20-23
You, who have shown me great and severe troubles, Shall revive me again, And bring me up again from the depths of the earth. You shall increase my greatness, And comfort me on every side. Also with the lute I will praise you– And Your faithfulness, O my God! To You I will sing with the harp, O Holy One of Israel. My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing to You, And my soul, which You have redeemed.
Psalm 73:23-26
…I am continually with You; You have taken hold of my right hand. With Your counsel You will guide me, And afterward receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth. My flesh and my heart may fail, But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven – A time to give birth and a time to die; A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted. A time to kill and a time to heal; A time to tear down and a time to build up. A time to weep and a time to laugh; A time to mourn and a time to dance. A time to throw stones and a time to gather stones; A time to embrace and a time to shun embracing. A time to search and a time to give up as lost; A time to keep and a time to throw away. A time to tear apart and a time to sew together; A time to be silent and a time to speak.A time to love and a time to hate; A time for war and a time for peace.
Matthew 5:1-4
The Sermon on the Mount: The Beatitudes
When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted…”
Matthew 23:37-39
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling. Behold, your house is being left to you desolate! For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, ‘BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!’
Jesus mourns too for His children. We are created in His image and He is the holy and righteous One who understands your longing for your children.
Luke 1:76-79
Zacharias’ prophecy over his child, John the Baptist
“And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; For you will go on BEFORE THE LORD TO PREPARE HIS WAYS; to give to His people the knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, with which the Sunrise from on high will visit us, TO SHINE UPON THOSE WHO SIT IN DARKNESS AND THE SHADOW OF DEATH, to guide our feet into the way of peace.“
John 14:16-20
I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. After a little while the world will no longer see Me, but you will see Me; because I live, you will live also. In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.
There is no greater joy than knowing the promises of God are true. When we follow Jesus, the Holy Spirit lives within us. Only in Jesus can we receive full comfort and healing. Our pain may not be gone nor our healing complete this side of heaven but God’s promises are true and He is our source of comfort and strength as we journey through the pain and into the arms of the One who loves us most.
John 16:5-7, 20-22, 32-33
But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you…
…Truly, truly, I say to you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will grieve, but your grief will be turned into joy. Whenever a woman is in labor she has pain, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a child has been born into the world. Therefore you too have grief now; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you…
…Behold, an hour is coming, and has already come, for you to be scattered, each to his own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.
Jesus, knowing the disciples did not yet understand and were beginning to grieve over His departure, promised them that they would not be left alone. Regardless of our circumstances, Jesus has promised the Helper, the Holy Spirit that lives in us to comfort us and guide us through the grief and the deepest sorrows and into all truth.Â
2 Corinthians 1:3-7
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ. But if we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; or if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which is effective in the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer; and our hope for you is firmly grounded, knowing that as you are sharers of our sufferings, so also you are sharers of our comfort.
2 Corinthians 7:3-7
…I have said before that you are in our hearts to die together and to live together. Great is my confidence in you; great is my boasting on your behalf. I am filled with comfort; I am overflowing with joy in all our affliction. For even when we came into Macedonia our flesh had no rest, but we were afflicted on every side: conflicts without, fears within. But God, who comforts the depressed, comforted us by the coming of Titus; and not only by his coming, but also by the comfort with which he was comforted in you, as he reported to us your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me; so that I rejoiced even more.
Paul is speaking here to the Corinthian church about community and encouraging each other in faith. In fellowship and relationship with others, we are kept accountable so we may encourage each other toward repentance and faithfully following Jesus. Likewise, during times of sorrow, we are there to comfort one another. We do not have to walk this journey alone. God created us for relationship and we need others to walk beside us in order to comfort us and to continue to point us to Jesus during the good times and through times of grief.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
Those Who Died in Christ
But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.
While we experience grief and heartache in this life, there is hope for those who have died before us. This is not a ‘wishful thinking’ kind of hope, but an assurance in the promises of God that those who are in Christ, will always be with the Lord.
2 Thessalonians 2:16-17
Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace, comfort and strengthen your hearts in every good work and word.
Titus 2:11-13
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour, Christ Jesus.
When we are grieving and in deepest despair, we must find hope that draws us through the pain to the other side. May we never forget our blessed hope in Jesus.
Revelation 21:1-7
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.” Then He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost. “He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.
